Wyze Firmware Update Failed: How To Fix [2023]

Wyze security cameras provide security and all-around protection around the clock. And for doing so, they require routine security upgrades. But what if updates fail on Wyze cams?

Wyze constantly pushes out new firmware updates for its cameras. It is important to keep your device up-to-date to ensure smooth device functioning.

Sometimes you may run into problems while updating your device but generally the fixes for these issues are easy and can be done in a jiffy.

If firmware updates fail on Wyze Cam, first, check and update the Wyze app on your host device. Check for network issues and power cycle your Wyze Cam before updating. Also, remove the SD card before you initiate a firmware update. If none of these work, re-flash your firmware manually.

Check the Wyze App and Upgrade the Firmware Version

The first step you need to do if your update fails on your Wyze Cams is to make sure that your Wyze mobile app is up-to-date and that all the firmware is updated.

Out-of-date app firmware can hinder camera updates as well. And so, it is best to check and update the Wyze app first before triggering Camera updates.

Operating on an outdated firmware version can also cause the Wyze app to not work.

Do so from the app itself. Follow these steps to do so:

1. Open the app and tap open the Accounts tab.

Wyze Account icon

2. Select About to see the current firmware version of the app.

Wyze About tab

The latest version will be listed in the ‘Wyze Release notes and Firmware page’ on the Wyze official website.

To update the Wyze app, open the application store of your device and search for the Wyze app. Tap on the Update icon to initiate an update, if any.

To update Wyze Cams, open the app > Camera > gear icon > Device Info > Firmware Update > Upgrade.

Wyze Update tab

Power Cycle the Wyze Camera

Wyze Cam unpowered

Next up, let's refresh the camera; reboot it to be more specific.

Power cycling the Wyze Cam may be the way to go in this case. Power cycling a device is basically refreshing it but in a more delicate and dexterous way.

This mode of refreshing may also come in handy for several other Wyze issues such as Wyze Cam error code 42 or if Wyze Cam flashes Yellow light.

Wyze Cam unplugged

To power cycle your Wyze camera, remove it from the power source and leave it alone for some time.

After a minute or so, plug your camera back into power and turn it on.

The camera should connect to your home network automatically.

Try updating your device firmware now.

Remove the microSD Card from the Wyze Camera

Wyze Cam with SD card

If your Wyze camera has an SD card inserted in it, try updating the firmware after removing the SD card.

Sometimes,a corrupt SD card can hinder updates.

And so, it is very much recommended to trigger an update after unplugging the microSD card from your Cam.

To unplug an SD card from the Cam, simply click on the SD card to eject it.

Install it once again after updating the Firmware.

Wyze Cams support SD cards formatted on exFAT. Installing it on any other file format will render the card unusable.

With an SD card, you can even use a Wyze Cam without WiFi by storing clips locally.

Move the Wyze Camera Closer to the Router

Move the Wyze Camera Closer to the Router

A strong and proper internet connection is required for your Wyze camera to work properly.

It is also essential for it to update correctly. Failing to ensure this critical condition may lead to issues such as Wyze Cam stuck on ready-to-connect or Wyze Cam Outdoor not connecting.

Make sure that your Wyze cam is close and in direct line of sight to the router.

Walls, solid partitions, and other wirelessly transmitting devices might cause network hindrances.

You could also try disconnecting other devices from your network to check if it resolves the issue. Heavy traffic on the network will impede updates.

Wyze Cams does not support the 5 GHz band. So connect Wyze cams and the app to the 2.4 GHz band at all times.

Manually Flash the Firmware

Manually Flash Firmware

If none of the above steps work, you could try flashing your firmware manually.

This step will require an SD card so make sure you have one.

Opt for a 32GB microSD card so that you can perform the firmware flash smoothly. You can implement the same steps for updating your Wyze cam if it keeps going offline.

The steps involved in flashing your firmware differ slightly from device to device, scroll down to see the steps to manually flash your device firmware.

You can check and download the device-appropriate firmware updates from the Wyze website.
