Software errors, crashes, and glitches are nothing new but understanding them and fixing them might become a difficult task. Application error with Kindle might be one such error.
Being an avid reader, the Kindle has been my go-to source. It has an immense collection of books and magazines, all at your fingertips.
That is why I had to find a solution when my Kindle app crashed right in the middle of browsing books.
To fix Kindle application errors, first, power cycle your device. Next, make sure you have a proper internet connection. If the issue persists, check and update your Kindle firmware to the latest version. You may also try and free up some space on your Kindle. If these don't work, factory reset your Kindle.
What Triggers Application Error Message on Kindle?
The Kindle application error is something that occurs when you try to launch or are using the Kindle app. It happens in different scenarios for different users.
Some may experience it while opening their Kindle, others after buying a book from the Kindle store or if you are like me, you may get the error message while surfing the Kindle store.
For the Kindle store being unavailable or for any other reason, the pop-up message is the same “Application error - The selected application could not be started. Please try again”.
And the exact reason for the same can be several. It could be due to:
- An outdated firmware causing a temporary freeze or Kindle to go on a restart loop
- A corrupted app cache due to which the app halts
- A slow internet connection
- Low storage space
- Temporary slow performance of the device due to a software bug
Whatever the reason might be, the fix is simple and could be done in no time.
Read on to see the steps to get your Kindle up and running in a jiffy.
Power Cycle Kindle
Power cycling in simple terms means restarting your device. It is the simplest and easiest way to get rid of any bugs and glitches in your Kindle.
Power cycling your Kindle helps it reload its firmware and refresh its connection thereby fixing any temporary freezes or accompanying issues such as books not showing up on Kindle or Kindle WhisperSync not working.
Note: Power cycling your Kindle will not erase any onboard data. After restarting, your books and settings will be left as they are.
To power cycle your Kindle:
- Press and hold the power button
- Select Restart from the options that appear
Once your Kindle restarts, check if the application error message pops up again.
You can also perform a hard restart and see if it resolves the issue.
To perform a hard restart:
- Press and hold the power button
- Continue holding the power button for around 40 seconds even after the power dialog box appears or the screen goes blank.
After this, the charge indicator light will turn on and your Kindle will reboot.
Check and see if the application error issue is resolved.
Check for Network Issues
A proper internet connection is required for your Kindle to work properly.
In the absence of a proper network connection, issues start to haunt your device. Kindle Book stuck on opening and the 'Update your Kindle' tile being grayed out are some of the examples.
Make sure you have a strong internet connection with adequate network speed. Internet speed of at least 1.5 Mbps is recommended for smooth operation.
Make sure you use your Kindle within the range of your router.
If you are using 5 GHz wifi, we recommend you switch to 2.4 GHz. Even though 5 GHz offers greater speed, 2.4 GHz is more reliable and has a longer range.
Make sure your router is properly connected.
Ensure that the cable connecting to the router is in proper working condition. If the cable is bent or torn in any manner, we suggest you use a newer cable.
Check if the application error message pops up again.
Reboot the Router/Modem
If your router hasn’t been power cycled in a while we suggest you restart it. It will help it refresh its connection and ensure a stronger, more stable, and faster network.
Doing so is known to be effective against issues such as Send to Kindle not working.
To power cycle your router or modem:
- Unplug the power cord from the router
- Wait for a couple of minutes
- Plug the power cord back in
- Wait for the router to restart and re-establish its internet connection.
After restarting your router, connect to it again and see if the issue is resolved.
Check and Update Kindle
The application error issue is most probably caused due to a system bug or a glitch.
This can be solved by updating the system firmware. The same can be said in the case of several other issues such as Kindle Unlimited not working.
To check for system updates:
- From the menu, go to Settings
- Scroll down and go to the Device Option
- Here click on the Update your Kindle option near the system version
- Your Kindle will download the firmware and update it automatically
After the firmware updates, plug in your Kindle so that it can reload all its books and settings.
You can also update your Kindle manually. Follow these steps to do so:
- From the menu, go to Settings
- Scroll down and go to the Device Option
- Here note down the system version.
- On your computer, go to the Amazon official website and check the latest available firmware for your Kindle.
- Check and compare the software version on your Kindle and the latest one available
- If they are different, download the latest available version on your computer
- Use a USB to transfer the latest firmware to your Kindle
- Wait for the transfer to be completed.
- Now, go to Settings on your Kindle
- Click on the Menu option (three dots)
- Click on the Update your Kindle option
Your Kindle will start updating now.
Once the update is complete, your Kindle will restart. Plug in your Kindle overnight so that the books and apps can reload again.
The application error issue should be resolved now.
Free Up Space on Kindle
The application error issue can also arise if your Kindle is low on space.
If your Kindle is low on memory, it can affect device performance and drastically slow down the device. This can cause apps longer to boot up causing application errors.
Ensure your Kindle has enough storage space left for smooth operation.
For this, limit the number of stored books on the device. You can upload the books that you have read already to the cloud to save space locally.
The application error message should not pop up anymore.
Factory Reset Kindle
If you are still facing the application error issue, the last step you can try is factory resetting your Kindle.
Factory resetting your Kindle will clear all its onboard data (personnel data, books you have downloaded on the device) and will restore the device to factory default settings.
Make sure you have your books synced to the cloud to prevent data loss. The books you have purchased with your Amazon account will still be present but you will have to download them again.
After factory resetting, you will have to log in and register to your Amazon account and wifi again. Make sure you know the password of both of these before you factory reset.
You can also perform a factory reset to get your way around issues like when Kindle won't connect to Store.
To factory reset your Kindle:
1. Click on the Menu button on your Kindle
2. Go to All Settings
3. Click on Device options
4. Click on the Reset and then press Yes to confirm the factory reset
After the factory reset, log in to your Amazon account again and set up your device. The application error issue should be resolved by now.
