If you are experiencing trouble with turning on Vizio TV, here are some troubleshooting tips that might help resolve the problem.
I decided to write this article after I experienced the same issue with my Vizio TV and found scattered solutions online.
If your Vizio TV won't stay on, check the power indicator lights. If the power indicator light turns on but your screen is blank, you may be having picture issues. A flash from orange to white that persists after 2 minutes could indicate that your Vizio TV is beyond the scope of self-repair.
Here are some checklists for you to cover before giving up on your Vizio TV. Most solutions mentioned here are independent of each other and it helps to methodically cover each one to resolve the issue.
Check the Cables
This is one of the first steps you need to cover. Ensure that the power cable coming out of your Vizio TV is plugged well into the socket.
It is also worthwhile to either try plugging into a different power socket or using another accessory or device to check that the socket you are using is functional.
Check the Input
Additionally, identify and check the inputs to Vizio TV.
Vizio TV supports components, AV, and HDMI modes of input. Ensure that one or more of these cables are plugged well into your Vizio TV.
Making sure your cables are sealed and well-plugged solves the problem in most cases.
Power Cycle Vizio TV
Power cycling is a technique that can potentially fix most problems.
What is Power cycling? Power cycling is the process of turning an electronic device off and then on.
It should always be one of the first steps for troubleshooting an issue.
Why should you Power cycle? Subjecting an electronic device to Power cycling resets its configuration and could potentially recover your device from an unresponsive state like a freeze or crashed state.
Power cycling also drains any residual charge held in your device.
How to perform a Power cycle on Vizio TV? To execute a Power cycle, first, unplug your Vizio TV from the power socket.
Once the connection is disrupted, press and hold the power button on the side of your Vizio TV for 5-10 seconds. Then, plug the power cable into the socket and turn your tv back on.
Check the Vizio Remote
If your Vizio TV is having trouble staying on, a potential cause could be your Vizio Remote malfunctioning.
As a preliminary step, try changing the batteries of your Vizio Remote and try operating the Vizio TV again.
Cycle through different available inputs to check if the problem is with any one of the inputs or all of them.
How to change input? On your Vizio TV Remote, the input button is located in the top left corner. Once pressed, an input menu pops up.
You can cycle through the available inputs using the 'arrow buttons' on the remote and press 'OK' to confirm your choice.
If you are unable to use your remote, there is a button labeled 'input' on the back of your Vizio TV. Press it to access the input menu.
If not, pressing the power button once will grant access to the input menu. In both cases, you can cycle through the available inputs using either the volume/channel +/- buttons.

Update Vizio TV
Most Vizio TVs are set to update automatically. However, there could be an available update due to a recent firmware release or because you have not connected to the internet for a while.
To check if there are any pending updates for your Vizio TV, first connect to a network, either through Wi-Fi or connect an ethernet cable to your Vizio TV.
The connection through an ethernet cable will always be faster and more stable than connecting over Wi-Fi.
How to set up Wi-Fi on Vizio TV? Press the 'Menu' button to access the main menu by pressing the 'Menu' button and navigating to Network settings.
Once you have chosen your Wi-Fi network from the available networks, a prompt will ask you for your Wi-Fi network password.
Once your Vizio TV has access to your Wi-Fi network, check the connection right away.
Once your Vizio TV has access to the internet, go to 'Menu' using your remote or buttons on the back of the TV.
Navigate to 'System' and then tap on 'Check for Updates'.
Once the check is complete, if there is an update, the system will ask for your confirmation to install the update.
The series of events through which Vizio TV installs the updates are as follows.
First, the update is downloaded from the internet and then the TV will undergo a restart.
Following the restart, the update is installed and the TV will restart a second time. Now, your Vizio TV has completed updating to the latest firmware.
The time taken to execute an update may vary depending on the size of the update and the speed of your network.
Factory Reset Vizio TV
Resorting to factory resetting your Vizio TV should be considered only after you have tried all the other solutions in this article.
The reason why it should be the last resort is that it wipes your personal settings, account setups, network settings, saved data, and other preferences.
How to Factory reset Vizio TV? Access 'Menu' using the Vizio Remote Menu button.
Navigate to 'System' using the arrow buttons and press 'OK'. In 'System', navigate to 'Reset TV to factory Settings'. A prompt will ask for a password.
If you have manually reset the parental code at some point, type that password to confirm. The default password is 0000.
Vizio TV will prompt again to press 'OK' over the 'Reset TV' option. Now, wait for the TV to turn off. Once the TV turns back on, the setup process will begin.
If your Vizio TV is the SmartCast TV version, you can reset to factory settings using only the buttons on your TV.
To reset without the Vizio TV remote, press and hold the input and volume down buttons on the back of your Vizio TV for 10-15 seconds.
A pop-up will emerge asking you to press and hold the input button to reset the TV to factory settings.
Check for Hardware Damage
There are some notorious hardware issues that plague all electronics, and TVs most of all.
Most issues with TV screens come down to faulty power boards, damaged backlight inverter boards, or system glitches.
A reason for your blank screen could be a faulty power board.
The Vizio TV has multiple power supply boards that are responsible for the proper functioning of all components onboard.
Failure of any of these power supply modules could result in screen or other issues.
A damaged backlight inverter board is relatively easier to spot by something called a flashlight test.
First, do a sound check and if your Vizio TV is generating sound but the screen appears blank, that is indicative of a damaged backlight inverter board.
The only fix for this issue is to replace this module. Remember to check the warranty.
How to do a sound check? To do a sound check, turn your TV on and make sure you turn up the volume using the remote or the buttons on the back of the TV.
Listen for sounds, in case you do not hear anything, try to stream something that you know will make a sound.
What is the flashlight test? This test is used to identify a damaged backlight inverter board.
Grab a flashlight and turn your Vizio TV on. Shine the light on the screen once the TV is on from a distance of 3-4 inches.
If you can identify an unclear image on the TV screen, your Vizio TV might have backlight inverter board problems.
Glitches are frequent in electronics due to surges or improper electrical supply. A common and easy fix is to do a power cycle.
