Starlink is here and has changed the satellite internet market forever.
Here's how to find out if Starlink is available in your area.
Is Starlink Available In My Area?
Starlink is available in most states of the USA, Canada, and Western Europe. The Starlink availability map can give you the real-time status of Starlink availability. In some mid-west and southern states, Starlink is at capacity and you can reserve a Starlink for getting it in 2023.
How To Check for Starlink Availability
To check if Starlink is available in your area, input your address in the Service Address search bar on the Starlink Availability Map.
If Starlink is available to order at your address, you'll be asked to pay the full amount for the hardware on the next page.
If not available, you'll be asked to make a part deposit that puts you on a waitlist for next year. Additionally, Starlink will email you when your device is ready to ship.
When you get the ready-to-ship email from Starlink, make sure to confirm it within the confirmation window, which is 7 days.
If you forget to confirm, you'll lose your order and will have to get on the waitlist again.
Note that you need to enter your street address, and a zip code wouldn't do.
What if you don't have a street address or your address simply doesn't show up?
Checking Starlink Availability Without an Address using Plus Codes
To use this method, you need to find out the plus code of your location.
To do this, go to Google Maps on your browser (if you're on your computer) or open the Google Maps app on your phone.
Identify your required location on the map and tap/click on the map.
This will pop the latitude and longitude of your location at the bottom.
Click on the Latitude and Longitude (Coordinates).
This will pop the plus code of your location.
Copy the plus code, (HW5W+4C3) and paste it into the service address bar to check availability for your location.
Starlink Coverage Map
There's another map called the Starlink Coverage Map which indicates the type of service you'll get from Starlink.
This map is almost the same as the availability map I linked earlier, but the map legend is different.
If you subscribe to Starlink portability or Starlink RV, the speeds you get and the latency you experience depend heavily on this coverage map.
Area | Peak Hour Performance |
---|---|
High Capacity | High Speed & Low Latency |
Low Capacity | Low Speed & Low Latency |
No Coverage | No Service |
This table applies only to Starlink portability and Starlink RV.
If you're subscribed to Starlink residential, you'll get first-priority service even if you're in a low-capacity area.
Starlink portability applies when you move to a location away from your registered service address (home).
If you're a Starlink RV/portability customer, online gaming on Starlink during peak hours can be difficult in low-capacity areas.
Data from users also point to poorer performance of Starlink users in low-capacity areas during events of bad weather.
How Can I Get Starlink Immediately?
In many midwest and southern states, there's a long waitlist until 2023 to get your Starlink.
There are thousands of people trying to switch from traditional satellite internet services such as Hughesnet and Viasat.
If you wish to get Starlink immediately, Starlink RV is your only option.
Starlink RV is a good choice for those looking to move around with their Starlink.
It can also be an okay choice if you don't mind the deprioritized service that you'll get during peak hours.
