Eero is a revolutionary wireless internet company that enables unencumbered Wi-Fi connectivity that enfolds your entire household.
These routers function as add-ons that you can supplement your modem with, to extend the reach of your Wi-Fi service, eliminating dead zones and drop-offs.
Spectrum on the other hand is an internet service provider that offers from 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps network speeds. And do they work together? Let's find out:
Eero works with Spectrum. To connect an Eero mesh router to Spectrum, connect the two using an ethernet cable. Then, sign into the router portal and change the network configuration from Gateway to Bridge mode. Disable the WiFi functionality on the Spectrum Router and reset all the associated devices to bring the changes into action.
Keep reading for instructions on how to connect Eero routers with Spectrum modems.
Do Eero Mesh Routers Work With Spectrum?
Eero provides consistent network speed by using TrueMesh technology which is actually patented by the company itself.
Mesh technology is essentially real-time traffic data analysis along with dynamic routing algorithms recurrently finding the optimum traffic routes to normalize network speed for all connected devices.
Not only do mesh routers work with Spectrum, but they also enhance network strength and connectivity.
We also found that using Eero routers instead of the OEM router provided by Spectrum gives better upload and download speeds.
Spectrum provides and recommends the use of their OEM modem to work best with their connection.
However, using Spectrum Router subjects your network activity to be tracked and monitored by them.
Eero has better network management and security capabilities.
How to Connect Eero Mesh Routers to Spectrum Modems
Spectrum connection usually comes with gateway routers which are a combination of both modem and router.
As a result, connecting your Eero mesh to the device will result in two home networks. This can lead to Double NAT and other network communication issues.
To resolve this issue, you have to convert the Gateway router from spectrum to function in bridge mode.
In bridge mode, the host device (Spectrum Modem/Router) functions only as a modem, thereby resolving the conflict.
To configure your Eero mesh with your Spectrum system, follow the detailed instructions below:
1. Connect Spectrum Router to Eero Mesh Router
Connect the spectrum router to the Eero mesh router using the ethernet cable.
One end of the cable goes to the ethernet port on the Spectrum router, and the other goes into the WAN port on the Eero router.
Make sure to use a supported Ethernet cable to connect these devices. CAT 6 and higher cables should suffice.
2. Sign Into the Router
Turn on both the Spectrum and Eero routers. You will need another ethernet cable to connect the Spectrum router to your computer.
Once you have connected to your computer, open the browser and type in the IP address mentioned on your router. This will redirect you to the router homepage.
Login in by typing in your username and password. If you have not set a username or password, by default, the value for both these entries should be 'admin'.
3. Change Configuration From Gateway to Bridge Mode
After logging in, you'll have to change the router mode to enable only the modem and disable the router functionality.
Navigate to 'LAN settings' and change the NAT mode to Bridged.
In case you cannot find the LAN settings, you can either contact Spectrum customer support or look up how to enable bridge mode for your particular router online.
Another suggestion that is solely based on your preference is disabling routing, wireless, DHCP, and firewall.
Disabling these features eliminates any potential disruptions and connectivity issues when connecting Spectrum and Eero devices together.
4. Disable Wireless Functionality
Since you are using the wireless capability of the Eero mesh router and not the Spectrum modem, you can go ahead and disable the Wi-Fi options on the same page.
You can see 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi options. Go ahead and disable these entirely.
Save the changes you have made manually before closing the window.
5. Reset all Devices
A hard reset is required to restore internet connectivity and bring about all the changes made so far.
To reset your Spectrum router, follow the steps below:
- Unplug your gateway router from the power source along with any batteries that it may have.
- Wait at least 2 minutes before reconnecting the modem to the power source.
- Give the device some time (2 minutes) to reconfigure and power up.
- The status light will indicate when the power-up is complete and the connection to the internet has been established.
Do the same reset for the Eero router by unplugging it from the power source, letting it cool down, and reconnecting after 2-5 minutes.
Once your devices are up and running again, the Spectrum router should now be acting only as a modem and your Eero mesh router should be responsible for broadcasting Wi-Fi signals.
If your Spectrum router is not a gateway router, meaning it acts as only a modem and not a router; none of these configurations are required. You can simply remove the router and connect the Eero mesh router.
Cannot Connect Eero Mesh Routers to Spectrum: How to Fix
There are multiple errors that you can run into while trying to set up your Eero mesh router. However, trying a few of the troubleshooting tips below will help you restore functionality.
Power Cycle the Devices
Power cycling your router and the modem is a must-do step.
It is required for the modem to release the IP assignment. Most modems are somewhat hesitant to share the allocated IP address with other devices.
A power cycle for 3-5 minutes and subsequently connecting your Eero to the modem should resolve the connectivity issue.
Check above for steps on how to power cycle or reset your Spectrum modem.
The steps for power cycling your Eero mesh router are pretty much the same. Unplug, cool down period of 2-5 minutes, power back up, and let the device initialize.
Eero’s LED will turn solid white and then flash during booting. Boot-up will take around a minute to complete and the broadcast will begin.
Once the power cycle is complete, the LED will show solid white again to indicate the same.
Rebooting the devices is an effective method to restore the connectivity between these devices.
Check With ISP
A potential reason you are having connectivity issues with the Eero mesh router and spectrum modem could be straight up due to Spectrum outages.
If you are having network issues, check with Spectrum customer support and they will confirm or deny that there is an outage in your locality or help you troubleshoot to find the root cause of the problem.
Eero Router Placement
Another justification for connectivity disruptions is the overlap between Eero routers.
During setup, it is recommended that you place the Eero devices within 50 feet of each other. But once setup is complete make sure you spread them apart, although not too far.
Think about each router as a link in a chain, each one extending the reach of your Wi-Fi broadcast.
You should always place your Eero devices on stable flat surfaces and at a medium height of the room. These devices radiate signals mostly along the plane they are placed.
Also, ensure your Eero router is not inside a closed cabinet. They operate best when kept in the open.
As you would know, in order for Eero devices to communicate with each other from different rooms, their signal might have to penetrate the walls.
If you have thick walls, this could hinder communication strength. So, placing these devices in a clear line of sight within each other would do wonders for inter-device communication and signal strength.
Contact Eero Support
During connectivity issues, once Spectrum has confirmed that there are no outages in your region, you should turn your attention to Eero support.
Eero support might suggest you remove and add the Eero device that is troubling you in the Eero app. Might as well go ahead and try that now if you are unable to resolve the issue.
The Eero website has a support section where you can directly ask the Eero team how to resolve the issue you are facing.
Nine times out of ten, it will be a known issue and there will be an infrastructure already set up to help you with it.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is a mesh system better than a router?
The advantage of the mesh system is that it boosts your Wi-Fi broadcast signal covering a larger area. So it depends on your requirement.
How many devices can connect to Eero mesh Wi-Fi?
An Eero can support up to 128 devices. For optimal usage, up to 30 devices with each Eero is recommended.
Does Eero have a monthly fee?
There are no mandatory fees or additional costs to use Eero. The only requirement is a modem and an active internet connection from an Internet Service Provider.
